World War II (1941-1945)
On December 8, 1941, the Monarchy of Thailand permitted the armed forces of Imperial Japan to cross their country en route to Burma and Malaya. Shortly after the Japanese landing the Thai government declared an alliance to the Axis Powers and attempted to declare war on the United States. The Thai ambassador in Washington intercepted the declaration and refused to submit it. During the ensuing four years of conflict many Thai government officials organized a resistance and intelligence-sharing network that provided information to the Allies. After the war Thailand did not receive the treatment given to the other belligerent Axis nations.1
