Soviet Sokol-KV2 Pressurized Space Helmet
This is a Soviet Sokol-KV2 space helmet from the Cold War era (1947-1991). The Sokol-KV2 series helmet was developed in the late 1970s. It was first used on the Soyuz-T model space shuttle in 1980. The helmet was worn with a full, one-piece pressurized space suit. The suit was designed with built in life support systems, allowing the wearer to survive up to two hours in a non-pressurized environment. However, the suit was only worn during exit and re-entry. It was too cumbersome to walk in and required a specialized chair, custom fitted for each cosmonaut, in order to be worn comfortably. The helmet was attached via a lock system and featured a larger visor than previous models. The helmet included a soft rubber backing allowing for more space and freedom of movement from a tradition hard backing. The Sokol-KV2 series continued use into the 1990s and beyond.1
