East German Army/Stasi Officer's Visor Hat, 1974

This is an East German Stasi, or Ministry for State Security, officer’s visor hat from the Cold War era (1947-1991). The hat features a light metal wreath and cockade. A silver double corded chinstrap is attached to the front by silver pebbled side buttons. The rest of the hat is slate gray wool with white pipping around the crown. The interior sweat diamond is marked DDR for Deutsche Demokratische Republik. DDR marked caps are often associated with members of the Stasi who wore maroon piping on their hats before changing to white piping with the rest of the army in the early 1960s. The “O” stamp is the letter code for the year 1974.
