Reissued German Heer M-40 Two Color Camouflage Helmet

This Model 1940 steel combat helmet was worn by a soldier in the German Heer (army) during World War II (1939-1945). The exterior shell features a two color camouflage scheme hand painted in splotches of red and light gray. There appears to be no set pattern to the camouflaging making this a custom job. The interior contains a well-kept M-31 leather liner stamped "1943." The 1943 date might seem peculiar because the M-42 helmet was already in production, but this helmet likely was reissued during the war. This is indicated by the new liner and also by the white "59" stamp on the interior that refers to the liner's size. The "ET68" letter code is stamped in the interior left skirt, signifying a size "68" shell in cm and the helmet's manufacturer Eisen- und Hüttenwerke A.G. in Thale.1
