This is an Italian Army bustina cap from World War II (1939-1945). The crossed axes embroidered bullion badge on the front of the cap is from an Italian engineer unit, with a metal “8” regimental designation inside the grenade of the insignia. A five-pointed star is attached to a cloth patch on the left side of the hat indicating the rank of major (maggiore).¹ Both the side flaps and the front visor are folded up, and attached by snap buttons. A label on the sweatband reads “5 1/2, 58, 7 1/8.”
