Italian Engineer Major's Bustina Cap

This is an Italian Army bustina cap from World War II (1939-1945). The crossed axes embroidered bullion badge on the front of the cap is from an Italian engineer unit, with a metal “8” regimental designation inside the grenade of the insignia. A five-pointed star is attached to a cloth patch on the left side of the hat indicating the rank of major (maggiore).1 Both the side flaps and the front visor are folded up, and attached by snap buttons. A label on the sweatband reads “5 1/2, 58, 7 1/8.”
