This kepi belonged to an auxiliary member of the French Departmental Gendarmerie. Auxiliary members (known as ajdoints) are the lowest ranks of the Gendarmerie and serve for limited periods. The kepi features the Departmental Gendarmerie colors, a blue top and a black body with silver trimmings, as well as the blue stripe that recognized auxiliary members. The front features a silver embroidered flaming grenade insignia, which is also featured on the buttons that secure the silver lace chinstrap.
