This French kepi belonged to an artillery Chef d'Escadron d'Artillerie (artillery commandant). It is made from fine black wool and includes several distinguishing characteristics. The front is adorned with a gold embroidered flaming grenade and gold false chinstrap with artillery side buttons. Four gold stripes run along the top that signify the commandant rank (U.S. major equivalent).¹  Also, a Hungarian knot is embroidered on the top.
