This kepi belonged to a Captain in the French 1st Artillery Regiment during the latter part of the Third Republic. It has a black felt cloth body and features an embroidered "1" unit designation on the front. The three horizontal gold stripes around the top of the body signify the Captain rank.¹ Also, two buttons embossed with Artillery insignia hold the false chinstrap in place.
