This is a German Heer (Army) officer's "old-style" visor cap.¹ It is piped in gilt wire, which was worn only by those of the General ranks.² The Heer service eagle and wreath are hand embroidered in gold wire. The gold color was in accordance with January 1943 regulations.³ Officially, this style of cap was discontinued in 1942, however, many officers continued to wear them up to the end of the war.⁴ The presence of the gold insignia indicates that the General who owned this hat was one of these officers.
