German Army Single Decal M-40 Helmet with Leather Carrying Strap
This German Model 1940 steel helmet was worn by a member of the Heer (Army) during World War II (1939-1945). It features a rough-textured gray paint finish and is adorned with a Heer eagle national emblem on the left side. Of interest is the leather carrying strap. This strap circles the helmet and clips underneath the side skirts with metal hooks. A small leather loop secures a metal clip to the back of the strap. This clip was used to hang the helmet from the soldier's backpack or belt to alleviate the stress on the chinstrap, which was often used. A carrying system of this type was designed by Josef Welte in 1937.1
