French Navy M-39 Helmet with Gas Mask Attachment

This is a French Navy Model 1939 steel helmet worn during World War II (1939-1945). It has a blue-gray paint finish and is featured here with a 1934 AFM (Appareli Filtrante de Marine) gas mask attachment. The gas mask fastens to the helmet shell by an elastic chinstrap assembly. Unfortunately the gas mask tubing is broken, but if intact it would fold over the helmet out of the way of the wearer and the filter would clasp to the back. The M-39 was only worn at sea.1
