German M-16 Helmet with White Cloth Cover
This is a WWI era (1914-1918) German Model 1916 steel helmet featuring a white helmet cover. The cover is made from canvas cloth and attaches to the steel shell through a series of small hooks that wrap around the helmet's bottom edge. Being white, the cover was used for camouflage in the snow. Helmet historian Ludwig Baer points out that white covers of this type were tested in late 1916 and early 1917 and fit almost every helmet size.1
