Deutsche Luftfahrt Officer's Visor Hat

This visor hat was worn during the early Third Reich (1933-1945) by officers serving in the Deutsche Luftfahrt under the National Ministry of Aviation (Reichsluftfahrtministerium, RLM), a branch of the National Socialist government that launched in 1933 and combined all aviation groups before the Luftwaffe was officially announced in 1935.  Under the RLM and the civil disguise of its subordinate units, pilots were militarily trained in secrecy in breach of the air clauses set down by the Treaty of Versailles after World War I (1914-1918).1

The hat is made from blue wool and has a black mohair hatband. On the front is an early Nazi Party style eagle national emblem. Below the eagle on the hatband is a winged wreath and cockade embroidered insignia. Both the eagle and cockade are made from aluminum wire. A set of chinstrap cords rest above the visor and are silver, indicating an officer rank. The cord is attached to the hat by a pair of silver buttons. On the inside is a manufacture stamp identifying the maker EREL (Robert Lubstein).
